Perceptual grouping for automatic detection of man-made structures in high-resolution SAR data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Modern airborne synthetic aperture radar sensors provide high spatial resolution data. Experimental systems have even achieved decimetre resolution. In such data, many features of urban objects can be identified, which are beyond what has been achieved by radar remote sensing before. An example for the new quality of the appearance of urban man-made objects such as buildings in these data is given and interpreted. The fine level of detail opens the opportunity to reconstruct detailed structures of such objects from SAR data with structural pattern recognition techniques. Artificial intelligence concepts such as production systems provide proper means for this purpose. The feasibility of these methods is demonstrated here. Extended building features such as long thin roof edge lines, groups of salient point scatterers, and symmetric configurations are detected using principles from perceptual grouping and Gestalt psychology. These are good continuation, similarity, proximity and symmetry. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Perceptual Grouping of Regular Structures for Automatic Detection of Man-Made Objects Examples from IR and SAR
Human observers perceive man-made objects in images from the visual spectrum domain as well as in IR or SAR imagery. Mechanisms like perceptual grouping are crucial to this capability. In this paper two examples for grouping in different image sources are discussed. The first example is activity estimation in urban areas from thermal IR images. The grouping of vehicles into rows is performed al...
متن کاملKohonen Self Organizing for Automatic Identification of Cartographic Objects
Automatic identification and localization of cartographic objects in aerial and satellite images have gained increasing attention in recent years in digital photogrammetry and remote sensing. Although the automatic extraction of man made objects in essence is still an unresolved issue, the man made objects can be extracted from aerial photos and satellite images. Recently, the high-resolution s...
متن کاملCOGNITIVE VISION AND PECEPTUAL GROUPING BY PRODUCTION SYSTEMS WITH BLACKBOARD CONTROL: An example for high-resolution SAR-images
The laws of gestalt-perception play an important role in human vision. Psychological studies identified similarity, good continuation, proximity and symmetry as important inter-object relations that distinguish perceptive gestalts from arbitrary sets of clutter objects. Particularly, symmetry and continuation possess a high potential in detection, identification, and reconstruction of man-made ...
متن کاملAzimuth Sub-band and Eigenspace Decomposition for High Resolution SAR Image Analysis
With the increase of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor resolution, a detailed analysis of SAR images over urban areas is needed. The high diversity of man-made structures combined with the complexity of the scattering processes makes the analysis and information extraction from high resolution SAR images over such areas non-trivial. In order to simplify interpretation and information ex...
متن کاملAn Empirical Study on Corner Detection to Extract Buildings in Very High Resolution
this paper, we examine the detection of man-made structures in Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite images. The first step of this detection consists of describing the objects' geometry through corners. Not only are corners an important cue for the presence of geometric primitives. They are also essential in forming higher-level shapes like rectangles and polygons through perceptual grouping te...
